Visa Processing Charge to be Implemented

November 21, 1997

For immediate release:

On December 1, 1997, the American Embassy will begin charging a $20 processing fee on applications for nonimmigrant visas. This charge confirms with a worldwide program that has been implemented at all visa issuing U.S. Embassies and Consulates. The processing fee will be assessed on each application for a non-immigrant visa. The funds generated will be used to upgrade U.S. border security and fund improvements in visa processing technology.

The $20 dollar amount represented the approximate human and automatization costs of issuing a visa at the time this charge was first implemented in 1994. Diplomatic and official visa applications are exempt from this charge.

This fee is charged by every U.S. Embassy and Consulate throughout the world. The American Embassy in Tallinn is the last visa issuing post in the world to implement this fee.
