Liivi Tantaal, a student at the Sculpture Department of the Estonian Art Academy, was selected as the winner of a design contest for a memorial marker to commemorate those American Red Cross volunteers who worked and died in Estonia fighting the typhus epidemic after the Estonian War of Independence. The marker will be placed in Tallinn near the burial site of the two American officers, Clifford A. Blanton and George W. Winfield, under whose command Estonian and Russian doctors were able to put a stop to the epidemic. Blanton and Winfield died in Narva in 1920, and were buried in Tallinn, Estonia.
